📖 The Scoop
The Allport and Prout familes were well acquainted during the latter's stay in Hobart Town 1844-48; and J.S. Prout gave lessons to the young Morton Allport during this period. Prout's 1844 trip to Lake St Clair - with Peter Gordon Fraser and Francis Guillemard Simpkinson (de Wesselow) - produced a comprehensive visual (watercolour) record of the area. On his 1863 trip, Morton Allport produced the first photographic record of the area using the new 'dry-plate' technique - these were the first of the wilderness photographs which have almost become Tasmania's national artform. This book reproduces many of the images, along with the artists' own accounts of their journeys, and supporting biographical notes.
