Based on a photographic project commissioned by the city of Tokyo, this book documents the architecture and public spaces of urban Japan. Completely different from a guide or a simple photographic book, this project blends traditional photography, Manga comic book imagery, video stills and popular advertising to present multiple definitions of space in one of the world's most enigmatic cities. The most dominant characteristics of Tokyo are not its copied landmarks, but interconnected flows of electricity, communication and transportation. Profuse overground utility lines, elevated subways, urban rail, high-speed trains and the Metropolitan Expressway connect Tokyo with the rest of Japan. Auto-navigation technology orients the vast expanses around the city through an endless network of transaction points, including convenience stores, fast food restaurants and shopping centres. been exhibited widely in North America and Europe at major museums and galleries. Snyder's works deal with urban environment, public space and architectural structure in the modern world.
