📖 The Scoop
When the Corcoran Gallery of Art opened in 1869 it was the first art museum in the United States capital. Throughout its history, the Gallery has continued to break new artistic ground by following a policy of acquiring works by both well-known and emerging artists, from John Singer Sargent to Kerry James Marshall. The Corcoran is also home to art students -- it is the only museum in the U.S. to house an accredited college of art. In the autumn of 2003, the Gallery will start construction of a new wing, which will feature a reinstallation of the museum's permanent collections. Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the wing will not only draw attention for its unconventional facade, but it will allow visitors to see highlights from the Gallery's diverse holdings in a powerful and provocative setting.
