Magic: A Season Remembered follows in the tradition of inspiring sports stories like Hoosiers, Remember the Titans, and When the Game Stood Tall. It tells the story about how the governing body for high school football in southern California gerrymandered the small-school division to accommodate big schools who hadn't won a championship in their division in several years. Of the 16 schools competing in the small-school division play-offs in 2017, nine were big schools with enrollments of 1,900 or more students. The goal was for a big school to win, but one small school did what no one thought possible: it beat the big schools, and in spectacular fashion. Magic is about how the right mix of desert rats, military brats, and one girl combined with the right system and the right coaches to create a magical season, unlike any other. Silver Valley High School, with 360 students and from tiny Yermo, CA-a desert school that at one time had the worst football program in southern California-took on the big schools from the big cities and fought their way into the Division 13 championship game to face a team that had been, prior to a new policy called competitive equity, in Division 9. This true story is not simply about defying and overcoming great odds, but about how peanut butter, family, and hard work can conjure up some magic when needed-which in life and football is often better than luck.
