METHODOLOGY
Many learners dread Chinese writing drills - repeating pages and pages of the same Chinese characters. Writing can be fun if done moderately and in varied ways.
Your child will be engaged because we
Limit writing exercises to about 10 repetitions per character
Create varied activities (e.g. varying word sizes, alternating between similar-looking characters, creating tracing and colouring options)
Present strokes in cartoons with easy-to-remember names
Provide more than one way to learn - trace, colour, write, visualise
If your purpose is to develop the ability to RECALL the Chinese characters you learn, writing the characters is only one way to register them in your mind. More importantly, you need to be able to VISUALISE it, that is able toย
see the components in the character,ย
how they are combined and
the order they are combined.ย
In our books, we teach Chinese characters broken down into PARTS (not strokes only). A part can be a stroke or a Chinese Alphabet.ย
A Chinese Alphabet is a repetitive component that is made up of 2 to 6 strokes. Learning Chinese Alphabets before learning Chinese characters helps to reduce memory work - donโt remember a character by disintegrated strokes, remember it by PARTS (strokes and alphabets) and do it systematically.
