The Rock

I find nature part of God's incredible imaginative creations, how things are formed and reformed over time. Rock is fascinating. There are three kinds of rock: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks form when molten rock-magma or lava-cools and solidifies. Sedimentary rocks originate when particles settle out of water or air, or by precipitation of minerals from water, which accumulate in layers. Metamorphic rocks result when existing rocks are changed by heat, pressure, or reactive fluids, such as hot, mineral-laden water. Most rocks are made of minerals containing silicon and oxygen, the most abundant elements in the Earth's crust.Interestingly enough, sandstone is a sedimentary rock formed when grains of sand are compacted and cemented together over thousands or millions of years. The sand grains are often composed of the minerals quartz or feldspar worn off other rocks and ground into pebbles. It reminds me how the Lord can take something corrupted, broken, and crushed and turn it into something bold, strong, and majestic. The Lord God Almighty turns curses into blessings when we lean on Him, heed His commands, and follow His lead. Jesus is the "cement" holding together the compacted sand grains. Without this cement, no matter how many grains are shoved together, they will quickly crumble.
