This book is an absorbing investigation of Buddhist thoughts and principles. After a brief description of the Buddha and his celebrated life. Alexandra David-Neel passes on to what the Buddha himself called the centre of his Teaching: "Suffering and the end of suffering". This is followed by a brilliant and innovative analysis of the 'interdependent origins' of suffering. It covers the nidanas and the eightfold path, which the All-Enlightened One had trodden to its end and which forms the basis for the Buddhist thought. The chapter on karma goes deeper into the profound teachings of the Mahayana and includes the author's own description of the Bardo Thodol made famous by Evans-¬Wentz's translation, 'Tibetan Book of The Dead'. Into all of this are woven Tibetan parallels, with amusing stories used to give point to the principles described. The author's distinctive approach to this subject makes this a most readable and enjoyable book.
