Several parts of India are vulnerable to natural disasters of one kind or the other, like flood, heavy rainfall, cyclone, strong wind, earthquake, avalanche, landslide, fire, volcanic erruption, etc. However, due to advances in science and technology, the phenomenon of occurrence of natural disasters and their characteristics as well as the nature of damage and destruction caused, it is now possible to determine these more precisely. As a result, occurrence of natural disasters, identifying locations of possible damage and destruction can be forecasted with a greater degree of accuracy. Availability of such crucial information in advance can greatly help in avoiding or minimising loss of life and property.

Therefore, armed with this information, today, we are required to cope with natural disaster through taking effective measures that are necessary for prevention and mitigation of losses and sufferings.
