I Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer is the second volume of an Edinburgh Love Trilogy. It follows on from the book The Way We Were. It's a Romeo and Juliet love story set in the Edinburgh of the mid-1970s and captures the city throughout the four seasons. It's a true story of a doomed love affair set over three years, from the early buds of love, into its full blossoming and bloom, before it withers and dies. The thrust of the story driving the book forward are extracts taken from Romeo's day-to-day journals. And whilst it records their love affair it's also a detective story too, because from Romeo's later annotations he isn't entirely sure just why their love affair played out the way that it did, ending quite so suddenly and dramatically. As in Shakespeare's 'So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.' Romeo wishes too, to record their simple but doomed love story putting it down on paper capturing two Edinburgh young people deeply in love in a particular era and of all their joys, their sorrows and ultimately their heartbreak too: in that respect, it's both a unique story but of course a universal one.
