A later octavo edition of McKenney and Hall's classic work, after the first octavo edition of 1848-50, reduced from the large folio format produced in 1836-44. The octavo edition was reprinted various times, and this set is comprised of 99 plates in two volumes, as opposed to 120 plates contained in the original three volume octavo edition. Sometimes sets of this edition contain a combination of handcolored lithographs and chromolithographs, perhaps because of broken lithographic stones resulting from overuse. Notwithstanding the notice in the title, this set is complete with 99 plates, as that is the number cited in the list of plates.
