The series was launched with A Portrait of Small Business Growth and Employment in Western Canada, a quantitative analysis that emphasized the importance of the small business sector to the region. [...] When broken down by province, the sample approximates the relative size of the respective provincial economies: 71% of the respondents were in Alberta and British Columbia and 29% in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. [...] And again, in each province but Saskatchewan, the majority of the firms sampled were situated in a metropolitan centre: 64% of the firms were located in the seven major metropolitan areas of Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Vancouver, Victoria and Winnipeg. [...] The urbanized nature of the sample is largely a function not only of the region's demography but also of the study's focus on the business services industry and manufacturing. [...] In each of the provinces more than four-fifths of the owners were over 40 years old and just over three-quarters were male.4 In three provinces-Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba-over one half had a university education, a result that reflects the technical requirements of firms working in the sectors sampled.
