Vegetation Survey of the TRH-150 Brush Cutter Trial Area One Year After Treatment

In 1991, the Vegetation Management Alternatives Program conducted a field trial of a mechanized brush cutter at a northern Ontario site densely populated with a variety of non-desirable brush species. The cutter shredded the undesirable vegetation at the site and dispersed the shredded residue as a mulch over much of the site. The cutter manufacturer has claimed that the layer of mulch would slow the growth of undesirable vegetation, therefore use of the cutter may be an alternative to herbicide treatment. This report presents the results of a vegetation assessment of the trial area one year after site treatment with the brush cutter. It summarizes the abundance and density of ingrowth and regrowth of brush species, compares these values with species abundance and density values recorded in 1991 before and after site treatment, and compares the extent of regrowth with mulch cover and depth values. A list of plant species identified in the trial area is appended.
