Gr. 4 - 7 Beginning with Benjamin Franklin's amazing discoveries about the Gulf Stream, Heiligman looks at how early scientists tracked the path of the powerful current. Then she discusses contemporary discoveries about where the current goes, how fast it moves, how much it varies, and how it affects Earth's temperatures. The focus is on the tools the scientists use, and the illustrations include old maps and charts, as well as today's satellite photos and diagrams of modern instruments. The decorative type used for the captions and inserts is not easy to read, but the dramatic subject will draw readers fascinated by ocean exploration. This is part of the Turnstone Ocean Pilot series, and, like Deborah Kovacs' Dive to the Deep Ocean, reviewed elsewhere in this issue, it draws on the research of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.
