A Library of Digital Bedrock Mapping Symbols, Part 1 : Digital Files, Figures and Descriptions

As part of the move toward digital acquisition, compilation, and dissemination of geological information, the Ontario Geological Survey created a library of digital bedrock mapping symbols for outcrop-scale features. The library currently contains over 1,600 symbols that represent bedding, igneous layering, paleocurrents, foliations, compositional layering, cleavage, fractures, faults, veins, dykes and sills, axial surfaces, and a spectrum of lineations including fold axes, crenulations, intersections, boudins, elongation, mineral, slickenside, primary, and shattercones. The library provides a standard set of symbols that portray the maximum amount of information but retail the intuitive relationships between symbol classes. The digital files include "dxf" drawings of each of the figures, a "dxf" file corresponding to each symbol, and Autocad "shx" shape files.
