📖 The Scoop
I was so excited to be selected for my 1st supervisor position and was eager to get started! After completing all the required training, I finally was given a team, my team, and I had so many plans and ideas of how I was going to be the best supervisor they'd ever had. Well, to my surprise, they weren't nearly as excited as I was and in fact, didn't really think much of me at all. See, I came from another location from down South and no one knew me except the manager that selected me for the position. Since the manager wasn't too highly thought of, the employees, including my new team, assumed I was a "chip off the old block" and had no intentions of making my job easy. As the newest and youngest supervisor, my peers offered their sound advice about what I should and shouldn't do as a "rookie" to keep things running smoothly and not make their jobs any harder. In other words, I was to go with the flow, make no suggestions for changes and ask no questions during staff meetings! Basically, I interpreted that to mean that I was to do nothing to draw attention to the stagnant world they'd created and if I did, I would regret it! My team consisted of a diverse group of employees who were conditioned to passive supervision and had very little hope of anything new or exciting flowing their way. Some liked it that way while others made it their personal challenge to create as much confusion and anxiety for the supervisors as they could in a work day. When I arrived on the scene, these employees were locked and ready to shoot because as the new supervisor, I didn't "know the ropes"! After my 1st encounter with an employee who refused to do what I'd asked (insubordinate), I realized that the training I'd received didn't adequately prepare me to handle the daily issues of supervision. What I needed was an easy, practical and applicable guide to help me effectively handle the situations I was facing on a daily basis. I didn't have time to go and read through a huge manual or take a course on how to hold meetings with disgruntled employees. To my surprise and dismay, what I needed didn't exist. This easy to read guide is written for all those supervisors and managers who can relate to my story and are looking for something to help them, right now!
