Colleen's family returns permanently to New Zealand now that her father has completed his term of working in Fiji. Back in New Zealand she acquires a car which gives her considerable freedom and independence. However she misses her friends in Fiji so saves to return there for a holiday, which becomes a working holiday. Circumstances prompt her to move on to Australia where she obtains employment although her motivation for going to Sydney is to join a convent. Events in New Zealand conspire to prevent this and she returns to the still unhappy family situation, which results in her moving out of the family home to live in a flat with two other girls. She has also met her future husband but the relationship is not smooth. There are some career changes and romantic adventures which all make for an exciting and interesting life, culminating in marriage and a family.
