Canadian Coastal Environments, Shoreline Processes, and Oil Spill Cleanup

This report provides an understanding of the dynamics and physical processes as they vary on the different coasts of Canada, including the Great Lakes. An outline of the general character and processes, on a regional basis, provides a description of the coastal environments and an introduction to the literature that can be consulted for more site or topic-specific information. The likely fate and persistence of oil that reaches the shoreline is discussed to provide the framework for development of spill response strategies and for the selection of appropriate shore cleanup or treatment countermeasures. Recent experiences on the Exxon Valdez and Nestucca spills and studies associated with the Baffin Island oil spill experiment and the 1970 Arrow spill have improved understanding of the range of shoreline oiling conditions that can be experienced. These lessons are integrated into the discussion on the fate of stranded oil and shoreline response options.
