Guidelines for the Disclosure of Personal Information for Historical Research at the Public Archives of Canada

This publication contains the guidelines under which personal information contained in archival government records at the Public Archives may be made available for research, in accordance with the Privacy Act. One of the activities of the Public Archives involves the acquisition, control and conservation of federal government records of long-term historical value. Such records may contain information that is not immediately accessible, such as personal information as defined in the Privacy Act. However, as these documents have been selected because of their historical importanceand research value, provision has been made in legislation that special regulations would be in effect in the Public Archives, permiting disclosure of personal information under certain circumstances.
