Hickstown (now known as the Crest Street Community) was the first community in the nation that stopped a highway from uprooting its neighborhood and forced the city and state to have it relocated in its entirety. This book gives a unique glimpse into one North Carolina family's history from multiple perspectives. It shows what segregation and racism looked like to people who experienced it, but it also demonstrates how the individuals in one family fought back and made a difference for their family and for their community. The book also serves as a timely reminder of the important and far-reaching positive influence that strong families and close-knit communities, both spiritual and geographic, have on people's lives, generation to generation. The book is a description of what a neighborhood should look like. It encourages poeple to think about what type of neighbor they are being. It also tells the Booth family story of living in that neighborhood and the values we gained from our parents and neighbors. Most importantly, it encourages the reader that his/her/their life matters.
