Professor S.K. Mitra wrote a comprehensive book entitled The Upper Atmosphere immediately after World War II. It dealt with information available from ground-based experiments. Since then, data from rocket, satellite, and spacelab-borne experiments have been obtained. As a result, other topics of the ionised atmosphere, such as the topside ionosphere, were investigated. Again, ground-based experiments using incoherent backscattering were carried out, and information from space on the Earth's magnetic lines of force became available. Nuclear explosions in the atmosphere, before their ban in 1962, provided additional information about the ionosphere. The Sen-Wallyer equation provided new insight into the study of the ionosphere.
Solar flares which affect both D and E regions of the ionosphere have been investigated. The ion-kinetics dealing with processes involving ionised and neutral particles of the atmosphere have greatly advanced. Satellite communication has opened up a promising chapter for telecommunications.
All this information is incorporated in the present volume and presented under the title The Ionised Atmosphere.
