📖 The Scoop
The collection consists of correspondence and a subscription list. The brief correspondence of the great naturalist, John J. Audubon (1785-1851), and his son, Victor, on behalf of his father, to Worcester bookseller Clarendon Harris, outlines the manner in which Audubon conducted his enterprise of producing for subscribers the plates of his Birds in America, and other works. A small volume contains the names and partial addresses of 181 subscribers to Audubon's Quadrupeds of North America (the volumes of this work were published between 1842 and 1854--plates 1842-45, text 1846-54--so this volume probably dates from about 1840-41). A number of leaves have been torn out of the volume, but those remaining contain subscriptions from several cities, including New York, Boston, Brooklyn, New Bedford, Hartford, Newark, Bordentown, N.J., and Hohokus, N.J.
