Engineering design work and risk assessment related to subsea oil and gas production facilities located in offshore frontier regions require an understanding of the processes by which sea ice (icebergs, ice ridges) can scour the seabed. To gain such understanding, a number of field measurement programs, laboratory tests, and analytical studies have been conducted in recent years. This report evaluates available deterministic analytical models of ice scouring, compares some observed scours with model predictions, documents current ice-scour research, and makes recommendations on future research priorities. Study effort focused on assessment of currently available deterministic models (force-balance and work-energy models), exercised and compared with a few available field measurements. Deficiencies in the models are noted. The appendix includes abstracts of relevant papers on ice scour, a model calibration and sensitivity study results summary, scour depth predictions from work-energy and dynamic models, and field data from some observed ice scours.
