"Krazy Kat, originally created by George Herriman "to fill up the waste space" below another cartoon, became a comic strip in it's own right in 1913, making it's debut in William Randolph Hearst's New York Evening Journal. For thirty-one years, until Herriman's death in 1944, the Kat and her tireless tormentor, Ignatz Mouse, counted among their fans some of the leading writers, artists, composers, and intellectuals of the time.
