📖 The Scoop
Shakespeare's First Folio, was published in 1623, the first printed collection of 36 of Shakespeare's plays, and the first folio book in England devoted exclusively to dramatic works. Eighteen of Shakespeare's plays survived because they were included in the First Folio, and thus, according to the Grolier Club's "One hundred books famous in English literature," it can be considered to be the most valuable volume of English literature. This "type facsimile" edition of 1807 is a line-for-line, letter-for-letter reprint, and contains a newly-engraved portrait of Shakespeare made from the original Droeshout engraving. The specially made paper bears the watermark "Shakespeare 1806;" see W. Jaggard, Shakespeare bibliography, 510
