This study examines where the changes in the employment of managers occurred in terms of industries and why these changes occurred. It first discusses the definition of manager and how this definition has changed over the years, then describes long-term trends in the managerial workforce from 1901 to 1996, based on Census data and historical statistics. Subsequent sections look at changes in managerial employment patterns, the educational & employment income levels of managers, and managers in the most anomalous of all the managerial groups: those in the retail trade, food, and accommodation services sectors. The implications of those changes for the analysis of managerial employment trends in the Canadian Occupational Projection System is also discussed.
