I Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer follows on from the book The Way We Were. It's a Romeo and Juliet love story set in Scotland's capital - the Edinburgh of the mid-1970s. It's a true story of a doomed 3 year love affair, from the early buds of love, growing to its full blossoming, flowering and bloom, before it withers and dies on the vine. It's also a detective story too. From Romeo's later annotations it begins to become clear that he isn't entirely sure just why their love affair played out the way that it did, ending quite so suddenly and dramatically. From the view in winter he goes a-searching for himself in spring. As in Shakespeare's 'So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee' the tale records the lovers' story - one which is local in place but which is of course universal in theme which many of us can identify with.
