The author's enlightenment is the realisation that problems exist in everyday life, be it personal or work related, and each problem presents itself as a treasure of opportunity. Instead of sulking over a problem, or cursing one's fate, and trying to win sympathies as a victim, it is better to develop critical thinking and analytical skills for problem solving and enjoy finding solutions to problems. The major effort in problem solving goes in identifying and defining the problem correctly based on observation, facts and data, and avoiding the temptation to formulate the problem on perceptions or hearsay. The book aims at triggering the thought process and providing exposure to problem-solving tools currently in use.
Almost all the problems that we face today have happened earlier with some individual, business organisation or industry, in some corner of the world, and successful solutions have been found. If one open's one mind and explores, thinks without mental blocks, the solutions can be found. TRIZ principles have evolved out of existing innovations. The critical examination using Why..Why and 5W1H method is based on Socrates questioning approach to learning and understanding. The fish bone diagram, Pareto analysis and various statistical methods are the outcome of a scientific way of defining and analysing a problem.
Not having a problem is a 'problem'. The more problems you can identify, greater will be your growth, as each problem has 'hidden wealth' and needs you to get out of your 'comfort zone' to unravel the opportunity.
The author has used simple, cost effective techniques, many of which are from the domain of quality management and operations excellence. They are easy to understand and are a powerhouse in their effect and impact.. The problem-solving competencies should be acquired by all, young and old, and the initiation should be done at the school stage to reap maximum benefits
