📖 The Scoop
At least thirty-two redoubts, stockades, and blockhouses were built in New Zealand in the years 1840-1848. They were erected for the defense of the local community, to secure a strategic position, or to consolidate a military line of advance. Fortifications were built at Kororareka, Waimate, Auckland, Wanganui, Wellington (including the Hutt Valley and Porirua), Nelson, and Akaroa. An inventory has been compiled and a preliminary assessment made of the current condition and archaeological potential of the sites. Development over the last 150 years has damaged or destroyed many sites and any remains that survive must be regarded as archaeologically important.
