"The Royal Society of Canada, the first learned society in Canada (established in 1882) and still the only one uniting all branches of learning , is in a unique position to conduct periodic reviews of Canadian scholarship. This collection of papers given at the Society’s meetings in Ottawa, 1967, examines the present state of scholarship in the humanities and the social sciences, and scans the future for changing conditions and new challenges in these fields. Following an Introduction by Watson Kirkconnell, the papers are arranged in three groups: the first section, “The Resources of Scholarship,” contains essays by W. Kaye Lamb, F. E. L. Priestley, and John F. Graham. In the second section, “Scholarship in the Humanities,” there are papers by Roy Daniells on literary scholarship, Jean Sutherland Boggs on the history of art in Canada, Thomas Howarth on the history of architecture, and G. P. Grant on religion. The third section, “Scholarship Social Sciences,” includes papers on Canadian historical writing by Ramsay Cook, on scholarship in economics by J. H. Dales, and on political science by J. E. Hodgetts. These eminent authorities have provided a complete and valuable survey of Canadian scholarship at the end of this country’s first hundred years.”- Publisher
