Lieutenant Edmund Patterson of the 9th Alabama Infantry Regiment once wrote that "one know...nothing at all about [combat] until he has participated in it." He was correct; to the uninitiated there has always been a curiosity concerning that mysterious realm. This book, then, was prepared using the infantryman's memories and words to shed some light on the subject of Civil War battles and the conduct and experiences of the soldiers who fought them. But it does not end there. The food they ate, the uniforms they wore, and the equipment and weapons they carried and used, are segments of this endeavor. Moreover, dozens of other engrossing themes are explained, from recruitment, training and marches, through camp life and muster out. Included too, are discussions on the wounds and field hospitals they endured, and the burials they received. All of these topics compose the interesting life of the Union and Confederate infantryman on campaign between 1861 and 1865. -- Back cover.
