Hettie Lou Sayre saw him do it. Looking out her kitchen window, she saw Roger Greenfield murder Megan, his wife and her best friend. Although she did not want to believe it, Hettie knew it was Roger: she had lived next door to the couple for years, and even made eye contact with him as she dialed 911.

Roger, a high school teacher since retiring from his law practice and a highly respected member of his small town community, proclaims his innocence- but how can he refute Hettie's testimony? A conviction is virtually assured.

When detective Rick Canyon learns of the situation, he knows his long-time friend cannot be guilty and returns to his hometown to investigate the crime. But with the trial only three months away, Rick is finding no evidence in defense of his client; instead, he is running into obstacles: local police who are not too happy to see him return; a scheming and ambitious prosecutor; and an irrefutable eyewitness.

"What's going on here?" How can this woman be so sure she saw Roger kill someone when I know in my gut it can't be true?" Canyon is completely baffled by his first- and most important- murder case, but he is determined to find a way to exonerate his friend.
