📖 The Scoop
Candidate materials for out-reactor components of candu primary water systems were tested for corrosion performance in pressurized high temperature water. oxygenated (approximately 200 ppb o2) and ammoniated water chemistry conditions were maintained for the third phase of this program. results from phase iii indicated that dissolved oxygen was beneficial to the uniform corrosion performance of most steels. however, under some conditions, the dissolved oxygen instigated localized corrosion attack. the dissolution of chromium plating was credited to the combined effects of high ph and dissolved oxygen in high temperature water. phase iii conditions also instigated stress corrosion cracking of both cu-be alloys and carpenter custom 455 steel, the latter only in the hard metallurgical condition (h900). candidate wear resistant materials such as the bearium b10 bearing alloy and the polyimide plastics, deteriorated after relatively short exposures to various low temperature (less than 80 degrees c) water chemistry conditions. however, waukesha 88 maintained good surface integrity at all temperatures.
