📖 The Scoop
Although Cunard today is little more than a brand name within a large American corporation, albeit a more famous entity than its current parent, it was for well over a century a significant and powerful independent company of worldwide renown. Its fame, in Britain at least, derived from significance far beyond the narrow world of shipping. At crucial points in the fortunes of Britain since 1840, at pivotal points in history, Cunard was there. To a degree it was also significant in the development of the USA, not just by creating the first reliable link between Europe and America but also by furnishing the United States with 2.5 million emigrants - the stokers that fuelled the American economy. And above all shipping companies, Cunard relentlessly captured the headlines over the years as it ferried moguls and millionaires, royalty and film actors, across the Atlantic in ships almost as famous as the company itself - Mauretania, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and QE2. In 2015 Cunard celebrates its 175th anniversary. The company's heritage dates back to 1839 when Samuel Cunard won the first British government contract to supply a regularly scheduled mail service across the North Atlantic. Since that date hundreds of ships have flown the Cunard flag and the Golden Age occurred after the Second World War when the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth entered full commercial service. This anniversary book brings together the full story of Cunard and not only follows the history of the company but also many of the celebrities and film stars who have been associated with Cunard. -- Publisher's description.
