Vue Entertainment Holdings is the third-largest operator of cinemas in the UK. This report examines the completed acquisition by Vue of the company A3 Cinema Ltd, including its subsidiary company Ster Century (which operates cinemas in Basingstoke, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, Norwich and Romford). The Commission concludes that the merger has resulted in a substantial lessening of competition (SLC) in the cinema market in relation to Basingstoke, likely to result in higher cinema ticket prices, and reduced choice for consumers. It recommends that in order to remedy this problem, Vue must secure the divestment of one cinema in Basingstoke to another cinema operator with sufficient resources to ensure its operation as a multiplex cinema showing mainstream films.
