Over the course of the last several years, because of developments in technology, the landscape of higher education has undergone substantial transformations. Internet connections that are quicker and networking tactics that are more successful have made it possible for instructors and students to have access to a greater variety of options accessible for teaching and learning. These new channels of communication, such as virtual learning environments (VLEs), online forums, and mobile devices, make it very necessary to protect data by implementing an efficient policy that is adhered to and carried out. The Irish Data Protection Act of 1988 was enacted as a result of this consideration. It was updated in 2003 to conform with the European Union Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC, and all of its provisions are still in force, with the exception of Section 4, which deals with compelled subject access. Section 4 is the only section that has been removed from existence.
