"The purpose of this genealogical and historical atlas is to present information relating to the development of the present counties of the United States east of the Mississippi River. The maps included in the atlas are designed to provide information from atlases which are not otherwise readily available. It is anticipated that it will be useful to genealogists, historians, geographers, teachers, and anyone interested in the development of the United States. It contains maps of all of the states which are entirely east of the Mississippi River. The maps themselves were selected to provide coverage of the various states from the 1800's to the present. Where the states came into existence at the time of the American Revolution, a map of that time period is included. The maps of 1804 are of poor quality because of the condition of the source document, but county names and boundaries are still discernible" -- Introd.
