This version of the Gospel of John aims to provide a version of the Gospel suitable for children so they can develop a daily habit of scriptural reading. To this end, it presents the Gospel story by story (traditional chapters and verses have been removed); it features sacred art from some of the greatest Medieval and Renaissance artists; and it uses a large, readable font and sturdy paper. Both children and adults will appreciate all of these features as improving readability. For the text, this version uses the Douay-Rheims translation--an excellent Catholic translation--with minor updates for modern ears (for the most part, updates involved eliminating thee's, thou's, thy's, etc. and using modern punctuation). The second half of the book is the Clementine Latin Vulgate translation. For the art, over 40 exquisite works of sacred art are included, with many from master artists such as Fra Angelico, Caravaggio, Duccio, and Titian. These artworks are all re-presented in the second half of the book alongside the Latin text. This version of the Gospel of John makes an excellent First Communion or Confirmation gift. It also makes a great birthday, feast day, or Christmas gift for your children, godchildren, nieces, and nephews. And unlike many bibles that are gifted (which are really adult bibles and are often for show), this one is truly designed to be read.
